Transition to Spring?

March is here, having come in like a lion with snow flurries and cold temperatures.  Today, however, the sky is blue, the sun is warm and the last remnants of snow are slowly disappearing.

Another page in my watercolor journal is filled with drawings of the Lenten Rose, or Hellebore.    It's hard to photograph because the flower heads bend toward the ground.  This is probably a survival feature, since the stems can take the weight of the snow and pop back up as soon as the weight is gone.  The first plant to bloom in my flower bed is a ruby-red one that has been out since mid-February.

  3. Lucky you, transitioning into spring with lovely bright flowers to sketch. We're still being hammered by winter, after being heavily clawed by a big white lion of a snowstorm on March 1, with an encore performance yesterday. Good reason for me to stay in the studio...and try to stay away from Photoshop.
BTW, Joyce--how did you get those nice slideshows to play on your sidebar? They show off your photos wonderfully. What's the secret?

  4. Signs of Spring everywhere today. I am so happy! Now that the Olympics are over, maybe you would like to move to WV? You would be most welcome in our studio. As to the slideshows, I used the Blogspot slideshow gadget and had it get the photos from my Picasa albums.

  8. YES!! That is the bird below on the journal page....I kept thinking of the word "Titmouse"....but didn't have my bird book handy....I'm not so knowledgeable on birds yet....and he flitted away so quick, but seemed rather brave and comfortable on my foot! It was a treat....now see!!...I NEED to JOURNAL!!!...like you....Thanks Joyce!!! I'll be back!

  12. Hi, thanks for joining me & maybe I was being blind but I couldn't see a way of finding you, except thru Linda, above. Your drawings are lovely, I need to go practice! Wish I had helibores in my garden, they don't seem to come thru the damp winter.

  14. Lovely! And your info on the Lenten Rose... interesting that they bow their bloom down in order to handle the snow! It kind of reminds me of humility in life, also bowing down to the King with it's resulting protection.

Thanks for visiting my blog... I'll see you 'round!

  15. What a great page from your journal. Just love it! I have heliobores in my garden too and they are going to town but nothing like yours is. I'm envious.
